Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and our Father; ~ 1 Thessalonians 1:3 KJV
All Eyes On You
Did you know that the eyes of the world are on us? Since this is true, we must make sure that we not only say the right things, but we also need to do those things which are right. In times like these it is important that we walk and talk just like Jesus.
Yes the eyes of the world are upon us as we love those who don’t love us. The world is watching as we are kind to those who are not kind to us. They are watching us Christians as we demonstrate and display the power of God in our lives. This motivates us to work hard to be a good example and continue to be that example to a world running rampant with sin.
1 Thessalonians chapter 1 reflects Paul’s gratitude to the Thessalonian church for their works of faith and labor of love. So the first thing I want to encourage you with is that your labor of love will not go unrecognized in the sight of an all seeing God. Don’t worry about recognition down here, God has a great reward waiting for you in Heaven.
It was Paul who had planted this church. It was Paul who had organized this church and he was mindful of their spiritual growth. So here he salutes them for their acts of love. This church was not a lazy church, they were not a stagnant church, but they were busy doing what God would have them to do.
A church that’s not moving, ain’t going nowhere!
Not Business, But His Business
Readers! It’s time out for playing church! It’s time to be about the fathers business!
This Thessalonian church was so committed to doing Gods will that even the strangers began to take notice. We must be the example that God has required us to be if we expect better days to come. God is looking for a faithful commitment from His people, and since He has committed His love to us, we owe a committed life to Him.
So what are you saying Rev. Neal?
Brothers and Sisters we can not and should not be satisfied with just coming to church. We should understand that there is much more work to be done. The faith of this Thessalonian church produced work, their work produced labor, their labor produced hope, and their hope produced patience. I want you to know today that God expects no less from us than what He expected from this Thessalonian church.
The question is, can God count on you?
- Can He count on you to love where there is no love?
- Can He count on you to go where you don’t want to go?
- Can He count on you to give when you don’t have it to give?
- Can He count on you to be the example for others to follow?
See God is counting on His people to be the light that hides the darkness.
Love What You Do
Paul commends them on their continued labor of love. The word continue means to persist in an activity or process. So in order for us to persist in labor, we must have a desire (love) for what it is we’re doing.
If you don’t love what you’re doing, there’s a good chance you won’t do it very long.
See if your heart isn’t in it, your mind won’t be on it, and sooner or later people will be looking for you to perform it, and you won’t be around to labor in it. However, the Thessalonians did what they loved and they loved what they did. They labored in love.
So what’s your labor of love? You can labor in love by:
- Helping feed the homeless.
- Caring for the sick or elderly.
- Giving to the poor.
- Sharing God’s word with the world.
- Participating in volunteer work.
The Thessalonians labor of love led to them being a blessing to others. Their actions are an example for us to follow.
How Can You Become A Godly Example
- Be willing to commit yourself to the work. (3 John 1:5)
- Pray and ask God to show you the work that needs to be done. (Luke 1:79)
- Ask God for strength to endure tough situations. (2 Timothy 4:5)
- Plan to be obedient to the work God assigns you. (Genesis 27:8)
- Be confident that you can do it. (Philippians 4:13)
- Be determined, don’t let anything get in your way. (Romans 8:38,39)
If you are laboring in your church, I want to encourage you to continue in the work. Keep working and no matter what happens don’t give up. Test and trials only come to make you strong. Don’t avoid the opposition, stand strong, be encouraged, so what if they talk about you. Remember, we can’t stop people from talking about us, but we can give them something to talk about. Let them talk about our goodness, our faithfulness, our obedience, and most of all our commitment to God by being A Godly Example.
